ABC’s of 1st - Grade Room 1

 



If your child is absent, please call the school to let us know. Feel free to email me if you want his or her homework sent home with someone.

Peanut allergies have become very serious in school situations. Our class will be PEANUT FREE this year. For the safety of the students, please do not send your child to school with any food containing peanuts or peanut butter.


If you would like to send a birthday treat with your child on or near his/her birthday, please feel free to do so.
I will send home book order forms for you and your child to look over every month or two. Book clubs offer books at reduced prices. It's a great way to build your child's home library!

Communication is important. Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question or concern. You can reach me by phone (708-442-5747), in person, by email (kmitchj@stmaryschool.net), or by note.

Discipline is very important. We work hard as a class to make the classroom a positive and safe place for all. Please continue to check the take home folder for day-to-day information on behavior.

Edline is a great tool. Please be sure to check it.




We will take at least 2 field trips this school year. Information about the field trips will come home at a later time.


Our class will have gym class every Wednesday and Friday. The children are asked to wear their gym uniforms days.


Students will have homework Monday through Thursday. This homework may be reading, spelling, math, and more.

Please be sure to check homework depot every day for homework assignments and reminders.

In handwriting this year we will be focusing on lowercase and uppercase letters.



Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom.



Writing takes place every day in our classroom. One way we accomplish this is through free writing in our journals.



Keep updated by checking homework depot and Edline.



Our class will visit the library once a week on Thursdays. Your child will check out a book when we visit the library and return it the following week. If your child forgets to return the book, they will not be allowed to check out a new book until it is returned.

Language arts will be covering the following this year: listening, speaking, rhyming, parts of a sentence, noun, verbs, ordinal words, poems and describing words.


Our Mass day is Monday.

The children will have music class every Monday and Thursday.

Math this year we will be focusing on: addition and subtraction, graphs, patterns, money, time, measurement, geometry and fractions.



A weekly newsletter from the school is uploaded on Thursdays. Please remember to check that.



We are doing our best to practice being organized! Keeping neat desks and clean folders is key!



When picking up your child early, please send in a note or call the school.
Phonics will cover: short and long vowel sounds, initial and final consonants, r-controlled vowels, contractions, possessives, and inflected endings.

Report cards will be given out 4 times this school year.

We have recess, everyday at 11:50. Please dress your child accordingly, especially in the winter.

Religion will cover: Jesus, his followers, Jesus’ stories, and Jesus telling about God.




Spelling words will always be posted on homework depot.

In Social Studies we'll be covering: School, families, needs and wants, neighborhoods and communities, our country and holidays.

Our specials schedule is as follows: Monday Music 1:20- 1:50, Tuesday Art 9:50 – 10:35 & Technology 12:50 – 1:35, Wednesday Gym 1:20 – 1:50, Thursday Library 9:30 – 10:00 & Music 1:20 – 1:50, Friday Gym 1:20 – 1:50

Science will cover the following: animals, matter, physics, health, the weather and how to care for the Earth.



If your child has any changes in their transportation please let me know in writing or by email.

Please consider volunteering in our school this year.

Visitors must register in the office and pick up a badge.

Family vacations are wonderful opportunities for your family, however, please be sure to let us know that you are planning on taking a vacation during school time. With proper notice, I can put some work together.


First graders are very hard workers! Encouragement and support is always helpful!



Parents and family members may eXit and enter via the main school entry.



Your ideas…and suggestions are always welcome!

Zzzzzzz - Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give your child.
