Students took a field trip to Graue Mill October 7. It was a beautiful Autumn day to walk along the Des Plaines River to the old grist mill. Students learned about life during the 1800's. They saw demonstrations of weaving, spinning, and grinding the grain. They also were able to look at part of the underground railroad. Some of the students were able to take part in the demonstrations.
Students realized that life was very different during that time period. People had to work hard to meet needs that we take for granted today. They realized how important simple machines were in the early settlers lives. The wheel and axle as well as gears made life a lot easier for the people. The water wheel powered the grist stones to grind the grain. The cogs and gears made the work go faster. Also creating a corn husker which was also a wheel and axle made the job easier.
