Chapter 4 Science Study Guide

-Plants that need a lot of water will do well in the rain forest because it is very wet in the rain forest. A plant that needs very little water would not do well in the rain forest, but would need the desert climate.

-An Alaskan husky dog has thick fur because it developed the fur to survive in the cold winters of Alaska.

-Birds may not be the same color all year long. Birds might change color to blend into their environment. Since their environment will change depending on the season, so will the color of the bird.

-To find out how competition for space affects a tomato you could conduct a test by planting some tomato plants close together and some far apart. You would water them regularly using the same amount of water. Then you could watch to see which grows better. You would carefully check the roots to see which one had roots going farther down into the ground.

-A giraffe and an antelope would avoid competition because they have different niches.

-A forest will recover after a volcano by small plants beginning to grow under the ash.

-The tiger has a striped coat, which allows it to sneak up on its prey. This is a form of adaptation.

-People endanger animals when they take away the habitats. This is the main reason for animals to become endangered. Cutting down the rain forest is endangering many animals.

-When plants are too close together there is competition between organisms.

- When an endangered animal is not protected it faces extinction. This is true for the California condor.

- Different beaks help birds get food. A long curved beak is good for collecting nectar. A short thick beak is good for eating seeds and nuts. While short pointed beak is good to eat insects. This is another form of adaptation.

- Geese have wide, webbed feed while eagles have strong claws or talons. They are different because the feet are adapted to do different jobs.

- A temperate forest is the most common in the U.S. That means the temperature changes in the forest according to the season.

- An organism that cannot adapt will perish.

- Competition is two organisms working against each other to get what they need.

- Every organism in an ecosystem has its own role, called a niche.

- Sometimes an organism will relocate to find a new home in order to survive.

- Dinosaurs are extinct animals.

- Some examples of adaptation are the shape of a bird's beak and a giraffe's long neck.

- Some animals are hard to see because their camouflage matches their surroundings.

- Mimicry is an animal protecting itself by looking like a predator.
