LANGUAGE ARTS
Reading/ Grammar/ Spelling
All of the Language Arts are integrated through the reading series. The whole language arts program is published by Scott Foresman and based on the Illinois state teaching standards. Our series is called 'Reading Street". There are two books with two work books to accompany each. The series is based on six unit with five main stories. The spelling words, vocabulary, and grammar are all based on these stories.
Students do a number of rereading strategies and reading skills with each story. There is a weekly test based on vocabulary and comprehension of each story. Students also do guided reading along with fluency assessment. The fluency assessment is timed with a selected reading and calculated with the number of errors (incorrect word substitution). Students should be reading at a minimum 0f 90-100 per minutes at the beginning of third grade, and 100-120 by the end of third grade. The success tracker will be used to give additional reading assignments based on your child's individual needs. This will be in full operation by the middle of November. Please register your child and keep the registration at home. Once you child is registered, their name shows up on my computer program.
In addition to the reading series students will read chapter books of a diverse genre. The students will also read Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" which is written on a child's level.
