Science Chapter 1 Study Guide
-Organism--- A living thing.
-Environment---everything that surrounds a living thing such as the air and water.
-Reproduction--- Organisms make more of their own kind.
-Root--- part of the plant that grows underground.
-Stem---part of the plant that carries minerals and water from the root.
-Embryo--- is a young plant that is just beginning to grow.
-Leaf--- part of the plant that takes in sunlight and air.
-Conifer--- plant that produces seeds in cones.
-Cell--- all cells have a nucleus, it is the basic building block of life.
-Respond---to react to changes in environment; such as plants will bend toward the light.
-Mineral---a natural substance that is neither plant nor animal.
-Energy--- is the ability to do work. Chlorophyl traps energy that is in the sunlight for the plant to makes its own food.
-Oxygen---a gas that is in air and water.
-Heredity---the passing os traits from parent to offspring. This happens in both plants and animals. It is when the plant or animal looks like the parent.
-Life Cycle- all stages of development in an organism's life.
-Flowering Plant---a plant that produces seeds inside the flower of the plant.
-Plants respond to environment by bending toward the light.
-Plants make their own food by using chlorophyl to trap light.
-Cholorplast is found in a plant cell, but not in an animal cell.
-Adult plants are able to reproduce new plants.
-A young plant is a seedling. It needs sunlight, water, minerals, and air. Because they are young the die easily.
-We depend on plants for food and oxygen. We also eat animals that need plants to live.
-Seeds that fall on the ground in the fall may not germinate until spring because of the cold environment.
-You can make new plants by taking a cutting from an adult plant. Keep the cutting in water until it has roots, then you can plant it.
