Science Chapter 11 Study Guide

-Matter is anything that takes up space.

-A solid has a definite size and shape.

-A mixture contains more matter than just gas.

-A metal is a shiny material found in Earth's ground.

-Mass is how much matter is in an object.

-An atom is a tiny particle of matter.

-Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

-Salt water is a mixture of salt and water. It is an example of a solution.

-A chemical change is when you start with one kind of matter and end up with another.

-Particles in a gas are packed loosely, not close together. There is not a definite shape.

-Matter that has a definite volume, but no definite shape is a liquid. A liquid takes on the shape of its container.

-All elements are made of small particles called atoms. Heat from an oven cause a chemical change in cookie dough.

-Iron and oxygen combine to make a solution of sugar-water.

- The energetic particles in a gas can spread out to fill a container.

-Particles packed very close together will from a solid.

-If you combine strawberries, oranges, and bananas to make a fruit salad, you have created a mixture.

-The metals iron, gold, silver, and copper are elements.

-Color, size, texture, and weight are all physical properties of matter.

Since there is less gravity on the moon, you would weigh less on the Moon than on Earth. The Moon is smaller than the Earth so it has less gravity.

-A bridge needs to be very strong so it would be made of steel and not aluminum. Steel is very strong, while aluminum is soft.

-Physical properties describe what something looks like, such as color, size, and texture.

-Hypothesize means what you think will happen. If you hypothesize, or think that sea water is a solution of salt and water, you could test this . You could put a cup of sea water into a bowl and let it sit for several days . Then check to see if the water evaporated and left salt. You would know it was sea water if the salt was in the bowl.

-Physical properties of a pencil would be: color-yellow: shape- long and narrow tube that comes to a point: size, about 6 inches :texture- smooth: flexibility-does not bend.

-When looking at a statue, and you observed rust;you would know it was made out of iron and that it was out in the air.

-Water that shows steam is showing water changing into a vapor.
