Science Chapter 12 Study guide

-The unit of measurement for temperature is degree.

-Heat doesn't move quickly through an insulator.

-Heat passes quickly through a conductor.

-You can close or open an electric circuit using a switch.

-You cannot see through opaque materials because they block light.

-Windows look bright and shiny because they reflect light.

-Sound is made when objects vibrate or move back and forth quickly.

-Electricity goes around and around in a circuit.

-How high or low a sounds is depends on its pitch.

-The loudness of a sound is its volume.

-Particles slow down when matter loses heat.

-Walruses have thick layers of fat that act as an insulator to keep them warm.

-A spoon in a glass of water will bend the light which is called refracting.

-Sound and light are both forms of energy. Sound is energy you can hear. Light is energy you can see.

-The path of a wire from the battery to the bulb to the switch is a circuit.

-To make a light bulb shine brighter, you can add a dry cell (battery) to the circuit.

-An insulator will keep matter warm. You may have a cup that is insulated. It will keep the contents warm.

-The eardrum vibrates inside the eardrum to allow you to hear a sound.

-Water refracts light or bends it. You may have a difficult time picking up an item in a pool. The item may seem like it is one places when it is actually in another.

-Animals can stay warm in the cold weather because their fur keeps them insulated. Also they change the food they eat into energy.

-An opaque object will make a shadow when placed in the sun because it would block the light rays and keep the light from passing through.

Hypothesize is what you think will happen. To test a hypothesis that heat moves through a metal cup more quickly than a plastic cup you could put warm water into both cups. Then place them in a refrigerator with thermometers , and check them every minute. If the temperature in the metal cup goes down more quickly than your plastic cup, then your hypothesis would be correct.
