Graue Mill

Oak Brook

October 7, 2009 9:00-11:00 A.M.

Students will tour the mill to learn about the Underground Railroad and life in the 1830's. They will watch demonstrations of everyday tasks to sustain life during that time period. They will also view the simple machines used to make life easier for the settlers. The wheel and axle was used to power the paddle wheel that moved the grind stone. The gears and cog wheel also were used to grind the grain.

Kline Creek Farm

In December, the 3rd graders went to Kline Creek Farm. We went to see what a rural community in the 1890’s is like. We wanted to see how a family in that period celebrated Christmas.
We went by bus. It took almost an hour to get there. It was so much fun.

We started at the kitchen. A lady dressed up in the 1890’s clothes. She showed us how the moms made cookies on an old stove. We got to eat them. They were very delicious.

Next we went into the living room. We saw the Christmas tree. It had homemade ornaments and candles on it. The tree had no electric lights on it. It could only have the candles on for a very short time. The tree could easily set on fire.

Next we went outside to see the animals on the farm. It was interesting, and we got to pet the sheep. We also saw horses and chickens there. Last we went back on the bus and ate our lunch at St.Mary’s.
