READING
Our Reading Curriculum is called "Reading Street," by Scott Foresman. This series encompasses Reading, English, and Spelling. All are tied together so that our English concepts and Spelling words are related to the current story we are reading. There is a wide variety of genres in the weekly stories, and each story focuses on a different reading strategy.
ENGLISH
In English, we divide our focus between grammer, the mechanics and usage of English, and writing. We focus on the grammer concept that coincides with the current Reading story. All parts of speech are covered in these concepts. In writing, we begin with writting a good sentence, followed by a good paragraph, and then longer essays and papers. Students will do expository writing, as well as have various opportunities to express themselves with creative writing.
The Invention Convention project ties the students' writing skills with their Science project. The students choose an inventor to research and are responsible for writting a "Tribute to an Inventor" paper to coincide with the invention they are creating for Catholic Schools Week. During the second semester, the students research and write a paper on the rainforest. Both of these papers are calculated into their English grade.
SPELLING
The spelling series we use integrates into the reading series we use by Scott Foresman. In each Spelling unit, the words will have similar patterns. Children will be tested on 25 spelling words each week. Spelling words are posted on http://www.spellingcity.com at the beginning of each week. Students can access this website at any time. There are games and practice tests the students can use to help them learn the words for each week.
