The Fifth Graders are using the We Believe Book as their religion book. We are working in Unit 1 which
is entitled "Jesus Christ shares His Life with Us." The
religion book is divided into gathering in prayer, listening
to Scripture, discussing the lesson it is teaching us,
talking about the lesson that Jesus wants us to learn, and
then an assessment which sees whether the message has been
received. Living the message is an ongoing process.
In fifth grade we study the sacraments. Our first unit will talk about the Sacraments of Initiation . We will also look at the lives of the saints and how we can find inspiration in their lives.
|
| The students will also be reading and discussing the Venture magazine on Fridays. This magazine includes the gospel reading for Sunday, discussion of it, and how this applies to our lives. |
Math
Fifth grade Math is exciting. We use everything that has been learned in the previous grades. We have just completed Ch. 1 in which we worked with decimals, reading, rounding off, adding and subtracting them. In Ch. 2 we will be using our math facts to multiply and divide decimals.

READING
This year we are using a new reading series entitled: Reading
Street.
In
this series, we will be reading parts of stories, both fiction and
nonfiction, and working on vocabulary, comprehension, and written
response. We are finishing up the first unit entitled "Meeting
Challenges" which had stories about people who had to face challenges
in their lives, both big and small ones. The next unit is called
"Doing the Right Thing". The stories will be about people and the
choices they had to make.
The students will also be reading novels. They have read Lucy
Whipple in September
.
In October they will be reading Swindle
.
The books are read and discussed during library time with an ending
project.
A calendar has been sent home for nightly reading . This will be done each month and counts as extra reading checked on the student's report card.

Spelling
We will be using a spelling book this year called "Spelling and Vocabulary". The book is divided into Cycles. Each cycle has six units, the last one being a review one. The students will take a pretest, do the pages in the book and take a posttest. Depending on the need, extra practice will be given. Below are the second five units in case the spelling book is forgotten on Thursday evening.

Science
The first month of school has found us looking at the kingdoms. We have watched yeast grow and been awed. We grew mold and were disgusted. We germinated seeds and dissected them to see the parts that turn into plants and we have taken apart flowers to find the male and female parts. All in the name of science!
