Grammar and DLE: The 5th grade English curriculum includes instruction on all parts of speech. Each day, the students will also complete two DLE sentences. These sentence corrections allow them to review and apply editing skills to actual writing. After we complete ten sentences, we will have a DLE quiz. These quizzes pop up about once a week. Students should review their DLE sentence sheets to prepare for these quizzes.
Writing: The 5th grade English curriculum also includes writing instruction. This year, students will write narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive pieces. They will explore different forms and purposes of writing as well. Students will become familiar with all of the steps in the writing process as the year progresses, and they will use each step in order to complete their projects. All completed projects will be compiled into a writing portfolio for each student. Throughout the year, students will explore their portfolios and determine how they can improve their writing based on their past work.
Journaling Students become better writers by practicing. Because of this, each month, every student will be required to complete one "journal." A journal is basically a free-write that has been edited and finalized. Once journals have been turned in for a given month, students will be given the opportunity to share their free-writes with the class.
Curriculum Fair: Students will be dedicating much of the 2nd quarter to researching an American history event, taking notes, and writing a detailed paper on it. Students will learn how to research using various source documents, cite sources in a bibliography, write an outline, and construct an organized research paper. In order to be successful, students must stay organized and on track with the class timetable. Students will receive calendars, and they will be responsible for completing all steps of the project on time. Get excited… this is a very interesting and rewarding project!
