During the 1st qtr of the school year, we will read the novel. I, Columbus. This connects to the social studies chapter on explorers as well as recognizes a special American holiday.
During the 2nd qtr of the school year we will read the novel, Witch of Blackbird Pond. There will be quizzes after we complete every fourth chapter. Reading the novel at this time, connects the students literature assignments with the period of time they are studying in Social Studies. The novel is set in the late 1600's in the Connecticut Colony. It follows the adventure of a young girl as she meets her Puritan relatives for the first time. She does not understand the community feelings of distrust toward the Quaker woman and the fear and suspicion of witchcraft!
During the 3rd & 4th quarters of the school year we read the novels: My Brother Sam Is Dead, Light in the Forest, and Slave Dancer.
Each quarter a free reading project will be required. For the first and second quarter of the 2006 - 2007 school year we will be selecting from books nominated for the Rebecca Caudill award 2007.
