7th Grade Reading

In reading this year we will be using several texts.

  • Literature Book
  • Authors in Depth
  • Seedfolk
  • The Light in the Forest
  • The Witch of Blackbird Pond
  • My Brother Sam is Dead
  • The Red Kayak

Our class will focus on reading journals and active reading strategies.  These will include predictions, connections, questions, visualizations, inference, inferences, anlaysis, and summary.  This means students will record their thoughts, and a brief summary for every reading assignment they receive.

Larger concepts will include but are not limited to plot, character, setting, theme, and point of view.  We will be reading fiction, non-fiction, historical fiction, drama, and poetry.

Free reading:  On Tuesday our class we will be using the library.  Students are required to do reading not related to current class work.   A love of reading is tied to the freedom to choose recreational literature.  Students should pick books or magazines that they will enjoy reading.  Free reading time is assessed so students must come ready to read, and use their time wisely.
