WELCOME TO ROOM 8-12

7th & 8th Grade Language Arts

8th Grade Religion

8th Grade Literature

Eighth grade is the culmination of grammar school and is the really important year in which students are expected to master the basics of grammar, spelling, and reading. It is hoped that our students' transitions to high school will be made easy because of the solid foundation acquired here.

This will be a busy year filled with a good deal of work - and , I hope, accomplishment and enjoyment.

7th & 8th Grade LANGUAGE ARTS

ENGLISH: Elements of Language- First & Second Course : Writing effective sentences, sentence structure, parts of speech overview, poetry, free-writing (once a week), revision, and proofreading skills.

SPELLING: Vocabulary Workshop - Level C

LITERATURE: Prentice Hall - Silver edition: This text is used in conjunction with novels.

During the course of the year, students will learn to analyze a short story or a novel following a set of 20 literary questions. Students will also work on the development of reading skills - inference, comprehension, and analysis. Tests and quizzes will follow completion and discussion of a particular piece of literature. Reading tests will be made up of three parts: vocabulary, comprehension, and essay.

The novels we will read as a class this year will be taken from the following list:

ACROSS FIVE APRILS, SHANE, CALL OF THE WILD, and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. We will also read the dramatized version of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. In addition to these novels, students will be required to do individual reading. One book report per each of the first three quarters is required. An optional book report may be done in the fourth quarter.

RELIGION: Textbooks: Morality and Confirmation

The curriculum is geared toward the students' preparation for the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation. In addition to classroom reading, discussion, reflection, and prayer, each student is responsible for completing quarterly service hours. Moreover, the students participate in weekly junior high and monthly all-school Masses. The ultimate goal of the religion program is to help each student have a better understanding of and deeper appreciation for their faith, develop a greater prayer life, and deepen their relationship with God.
