St. Mary's Art Center

What’s What in the Art Room for 2011-2012

As usual, we will begin the year with our fund raising project. All students, including the preschool create a piece of art that will be sent to a company named, Original Artworks, where it is added to various merchandise that can be purchased just in time for the holidays! A percentage of the profits are given to St. Mary PIE to help with the many things that the students and school need. Mrs. Salerno has graciously offered to organize and run this fundraiser. Thank you Mrs. Salerno! The project for this year will be a paper mosaic that will have a design to match your child’s room.

Next we will move on into drawing, working on self-portraits in different ways. Some of the older students will be using more mixed media added to their drawings. We will be painting winter landscapes this year with an eye on perspective.

Graphic design and printmaking are next and all grades will experience some form of this media. The results with this media are always rewarding and frameable.

Working in clay is next on the agenda. All grades participate in this media and it is one of the students’ favorites. Grades 4-8 use glazing products to finish their pieces giving them a very professional look. We are so lucky to have a kiln in which to fire the pieces. It really creates a great product. A big thank you goes to all the parents and students who made this possible!

Paper Mache and sculpture follow with more mixed media and fabric art. Batiking and weaving are part of our year.

We are continually working on Auction Projects for the Parish Auction and Dinner. These have always been a great addition and are greatly sought after!

There are several contests that the students can participate in and we always have some winners. Last year Nicole Crane, Class of 2011, won 1st place in the Cook County Drug Poster Contest and Maddie Shelvis won 1st place in the Fourth Grade Famous Women Poster Contest sponsored by the Riverside Library. The children work extremely hard on these contests, so it is very gratifying to see their accomplishments.

Every year ends with Art in the Garden. Art work from every student is displayed in Mary Park among the beautiful gardens perpetuated by the St. Mary Garden Club. Mrs. Boge and Mrs. Shelvis-Capistrano are instrumental in helping me make this event such a rousing success.

And lastly, I hope some of the students will join me for Art Camp which will be offered from June 11th to June 22nd. It is open to all students and culminates in a field trip. This year I am hoping to go to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

As always, thank you for the opportunity to get creative with your children. They are amazing!
