A Day in K-6

Our day begins at 8:05 am.  After the children get settled at their tables, we begin our journaling session. Each day, our journal consists of the student‚name, date, a letter of the alphabet and a color word. There is also room at the top of each journal page for our students to create a masterful drawing pertaining to the letter or color of the week. We have many Picassos and Kandinskys in our classroom.

Calendar follows at 8:50 am. This is a very important time of the morning when many skills are taught, but disguised in whimsical songs and teacher animation that enhance the learning experience. Things we work on during Calendar include colors, shapes, quantitative concepts, positional/directional concepts, rote counting. This helps develop identification of numbers, addition and subtraction, letter recognition, beginning consonants and vowel sounds, the correct use of weather words, days of the week, months of the year and sentence structure.

Snack is next at approximately 9:50 am, and is always a popular morning event. This is a great time for student interaction and socialization.

After snack, Math is usually taught. We have worked on patterning, graphing, problem solving, numbers 0-20 ,which is published by Macmillan McGraw Hill. We have worked on the concepts of large, medium, and small, position and direction, patterning, graphing, counting up, counting back, our numbers from 0-20 and problem solving strategies. We also work on our daily numbers, and each day we our getting closer to 100th day! Many children in the class can already count to 100!

At 11:00 am we prepare for lunch. This includes bathroom time, hand washing, coats, hats etc. (depending on weather conditions) and lunch labels, which identify milk only or hot lunch. Then we go to the Oak Room for lunch at 11:30 am (voted the most popular by many of our kindergarteners).

Our afternoon begins at 12:10 pm. We practice our Handwriting (our book is from Zaner-Bloser Educational Publishers) and study our Phonics Activity pages (Harcourt Brace).

Religion follows and is often a time of lively discussion. In Our religion book (We Believe by William H. Sadlier) we are studying the gifts of land and water that God has lovingly given us and our need to respect and cherish the home we call planet earth. Every Friday we have our religion Promise Pages that teaches us life lessons and also explains the Gospel for the coming Sunday. Thursday mornings both kindergartens go to mass with their fifth grade partners (September through May).

Our daily lessons also include work on the sciences and social studies.

Both Mrs. Carmody (K-5) and I bring in supplemental materials (books, crafts, projects, manipulatives, music, etc.) that complement our workbooks and bring a personal touch to the lessons being taught.

Our school day ends at 2:30 pm.

Extras you should know about:

Every other Friday fourth grade partners come to K-6 (and K-5 too) to read, write or play games with the kindergartners. Each child feels privileged to have a younger and older friend.
