MUSIC CLASSES

 SINGING

Singing is an important part of our curriculum.  Students sing alone and with others, using listening skills to match pitches.  The difficulty of the songs varies with grade level.  Older students also sing rounds and simple harmonies.

MOVEMENT

Students respond to music through movement.  Simple activities, such as jumping, walking, and marching, are used with the youngest students.  Simple folk and line dances are taught to all students.  Clapping rhythms and learning basic conducting patterns also help students respond to the rhythm in music.

CLASSROOM INSTRUMENTS

Playing rhythm instruments helps students identify and maintain a steady beat.  Simple melodic instruments help them recognize melodic patterns, steps and leaps in music.  Classroom instruments are used as accompaniments to songs.  They are also used for creating simple melodies and rhythmic composition.

MUSIC THEORY

Basic notation, music symbols and letter names of notes are taught so that students can perform and create music.  Sound scores and rhythmic compositions are created and performed using traditional and nontraditional notation.  Simple melodies are also composed and performed.
