MUSIC CLASSES

 SINGING

Singing is an important part of our curriculum.  Students sing alone and with others, using listening skills to match pitches.  The difficulty of the songs varies with grade level.  Older students also sing rounds and simple harmonies.

MOVEMENT

Students respond to music through movement.  Simple activities, such as jumping, walking, marching, skipping, and running are used with the youngest students.  Simple folk and line dances are taught to all students.  Clapping rhythms and learning basic conducting patterns also help students respond to the rhythm in music.

CLASSROOM INSTRUMENTS

Playing rhythm instruments helps students identify and maintain a steady beat.  Simple melodic instruments help them recognize melodic patterns, steps and leaps in music.  Classroom instruments are used as accompaniments to songs.  They are also used for creating simple melodies and rhythmic composition

THEORY AND COMPOSITION

Basic notation, music symbols and letter names of notes are taught so that students can perform and create music.  Sound scores and rhythmic compositions are created and performed using traditional and nontraditional notation.  Simple melodies are also composed and performed.

PATRIOTIC/FOLK SONGS

This year we will be working on a different patriotic and/or folk song each monthin Kindergarten and Grade1. Some of the songs we will learn are God Bless America, America, America the Beautiful, The Star-Spangled Banner, You're a Grand Old Flag, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Stars and Stripes Forever. Students in Grades 2 through 5 will choose a different patriotic/folk song to sing each week.

SONG OF THE MONTH

Once again this year we will be writing a song of the month to go along with our value of the month. We will be starting with the fifth grade and working our way down to the first grade.

The song of the month for NOVEMBER - HUMILITY was written by the fourth graders in Room 14.

Sung to the melody of B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

Humility is what we want -

Even if it's hard.

It's the key to being kind,

Being nice to others.

Share your talents -

Just don't brag.

Be humble every day.

I do this and you do that,

We all go different ways.

 WORD WALL

This year we have a music word wall. Each week a different musical term will be discussed and posted.

 SPECIAL PROJECTS

Fourth graders will study the instruments of the orchestra. We will learn about the instruments in the string, brass, woodwind and percussion families.

The fifth graders will be composing short rhythmic and melodic pieces and playing them on appropriate instruments. We will also be improvising on rhythm and melody instruments.

Students in grades 4 and 5 will also be able to learn about different composers this year. Each month there will be a list of composers - living or dead - with birthdays that month. Students will be able to chose a composer and find out facts about that person. This will be for extra credit.
