Tuesday after school is not the time for peace and quiet in the library! That is when Mary's Mentors, the school's peer tutoring program, is in session. Mary's Mentors pairs Junior High student tutors with younger students who need a bit of help with their studies. At any given session, older students will be listening to younger ones reading aloud, coaching younger ones through a worksheet, or holding flashcard "contests" for several students at a time. The program has proven to be so popular that it spills over from the library into several classrooms nearby. The program begins in October and runs through the entire school year. Students involved must have parental permission to participate and must understand that this is a commitment of time and effort. Service hours are granted to the tutors, and students in all grades have the opportunity to interact with one another in a mutually beneficial situation. Faculty moderators make sure that everyone is receiving adequate attention and staying on task.
