SELF-DISCIPLINE AND
MODERATION
Physical, mental and financial self-discipline. Moderation in speaking, in eating, in exercising. The controlling and bridling of one's own appetites. Understanding the limits of body and mind. Avoiding the dangers of extreme, unbalanced viewpoints. The ability to balance self-discipline with spontaneity. Health means many things: being able to motivate and manage yourself and your time, being able to control yourself and your temper, being able to control your appetites. Self-discipline is pulling up and away from the laziness of doing too little.

HEROES AND HEROINES
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE (1820-1910)
Born in Florence, Italy of wealthy parents, she easily could have slipped into a life of luxury and pleasure. However, she possessed a strong spirit that inspired her to seek independence and a spiritual conscience that moved her toward a profession and service to God. In 1844, Florence decided to work in hospitals and, against her parents demands that "ladies" did not become nurses, she found some private nursing and a few months in a German school and hospital. She volunteered for service in the the Crimean War in Turkey and struggled with the barbaric conditions of a field hospital. She created order and cleanliness, and mostly through the improvement of sanitary conditions, decreased the death rate by two-thirds. She led the reform of military hospitals and medical care and founded a school for the training of nurses. Her "Notes on Hospitals," published in 1859, gave detailed directions for the design of civilian hospitals.

Try to avoid "junk" food; snack on fruit and vegetables instead. Get some exercise every day. Get enough sleep to have energy throughout the day. Notice something beautiful in nature every day. Change a negative thought into a positive thought. Be aware of how great it is to feel healthy and strive to stay healthy. Play outside for awhile after school today. Choose healthy snacks instead of healthy ones for your school lunch. Create a chart showing the five food groups (be sure to show examples of each). Keep the chart where you can refer to it as the need arises. Develop good dental hygiene habits - brush, brush, brush! Wash your hands often with soap. Cover your mouth with a tissue when you sneeze. |
Assist with fundraising and special events at the American Cancer Society. Make a min-chart of the five food groups to take home and hang-up in your kitchen at home. It will remind you and your family to eat healthy everyday? Collect healthy recipes from family and friends. Then, as a class, combine these recipes into a healthy cookbook. Make copies for each student to take home.

The song of the month for April was written by the second graders in Room 17. It is sung to the melody of OLD DAN TUCKER.Eat good food and exercise,
Ride your bike and get enough rest.
That will make your heart feel right.
That will make your mind real bright. So-
Have a healthy body -
Don't eat junk food.
Have a healthy mind -
Not too much TV.
Take care of yourself -
And you'll feel right.
Have a good life and stay healthy.
